Drew Barrymore: Intimate and Emotional

Drew Barrymore grew up in Hollywood, a child actor born into a Hollywood elite family. She’s an award winning actress, businesswoman, and talk show host. But this post is not about the awards and career success; it’s about her unique style of interviewing guests on The Drew Barrymore show. No matter who the guest might be, Drew sits completely casual (even when all dressed up) often with her legs tucked under in a position that allows her to share in conversation on an eye-to-eye level that immediately transforms the exchange into a ‘heart-to-heart’.

The coziness doesn’t stop there. Drew openly shares intimate details of life experiences that she’s been through relevant to each conversation. She talks with sincerity and transparency uncommon in Hollywood. She’s deeply emotional, genuinely caring, and equally communicative- qualities that should be noticeable in her birth chart. Let’s take a look.

In the Vedic Astrology system, Drew has Taurus Ascendant, so right away we can see that she’s someone who is beautiful, loves to be surrounded by beautiful people and beautiful things. Despite all of the ups and downs in her life, the extreme highs and privilege from the Barrymore family lineage and legacy, she has arrived to where she currently is in life– pretty grounded. Her Ascendant ruler Venus is exalted, making all of this exaggerated and heightened, giving her quite a luxurious life.

When it comes to her intimacy style as a talk show host, Drew appears to enjoy going deep- deep in conversation, deep in sharing, deep in being vulnerable, deep in creating a comfortable space for guests to find safe and relaxing and trustworthy that they too can take the plunge to open up. She creates a friendly environment where her and her guest seem to be talking amongst themselves. Forget there’s a live studio audience or millions of fans watching the broadcast. It’s just them, sharing, connecting, and empowering each other. We see this charm, this innate desire in Drew coming from Rahu in Scorpio in her 7th House of partnerships, ‘the other’. Scorpio loves to take the deep dive into anything its interested in, especially people, and in Drew’s case, Scorpio rules the house of relationships. While this likely caused plenty of learning and growing experiences with both personal and professional relationships, Rahu in Scorpio 7th House is still a highly visible dynamic we see when she’s hosting. The deep caring Scorpio drive is on stage and delivers.

Interesting, the ruler of Scorpio is Mars and Mars is exalted in Drew’s chart, positioned beautifully in the auspicious 9th House of fortune and one’s truth or dharma. This strong and well-placed Mars gives her the courage to follow Scorpio’s pursuit and Rahu’s desire with other people. She’s a fighter, an advocate, and someone who will live by her personal truth.

In terms of communication itself, Drew’s 2nd House of communication is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication and Mercury happens to be in a conjuction with her exalted 9th House Mars. She very much will speak her mind and does enjoy serious and deep conversation that have meaning and purpose.

Mercury (as ruler of her 2nd House of speech) is often mischievous, comic, and childlike and we do see these qualities in Drew as well– including the youthful look she maintains, a gift from Mercury ruling the 2nd House of the face. But she takes her job seriously, too, which shines through her retrograde Saturn in the 2nd House, Saturn is the dispositor of her exalted Mars-Mercury conjunction in hardworking, business-oriented Capricorn. Mercury gives her the ability to shift into lightheartedness exactly when its needed. Without this Mercury, her conversations could go deep, stay there far too long, and create depressing and isolating gloom.

Yet gloom is likely something Drew is not unfamiliar with. Saturn retrograde in the 2nd House is in conjunction the Moon, the planet of feelings and emotional wellbeing. Saturn’s focus is turned inward with its retrograde position. At one time or another in her life, Drew likely kept much of her feelings to herself, perhaps having grown up in an adult world at such a young age, she might not have been able to simply be a kid and have an honest and reciprocal emotional connection with peers or adults. It’s possible that her mother (Moon) or grandparents and elders (Saturn) were role models for this ‘keep your emotions tucked in and hidden’ behavior, which was quite common for past generations.

But the Saturn retrograde-Moon conjunction in Mercury-ruled Gemini 2nd House is perfect for Drew when it comes to taking her work seriously, taking her guests seriously, taking their conversations seriously while sharing emotionally vulnerable conversations and having fun doing it, and always ending with a positive message.

What is your own communication style? Where is Mercury located in your chart? What sign is it in? Does Mercury associate with any other planets and if so who is it and how does it affect Mercury? What planet rules the sign that Mercury occupies in your chart? Who rules your 7th House? How does that planet affect your relationships?
